NEWS Group gathers signatures to limit tax levy
Signature drive continues Beginning today, two initiative petitions to roll back property taxes will be circulated in the Yuma area. The petitions, circulated by Arizona Tax Revolt, would put two proposed amendments to the Arizona Constitution before voters in the November general election. The proposed amendments, based on California's Proposition 13, would: -Limit tax levy limit increases to 2 percent plus growth, beginning in 2009. -Roll back a taxing entity's levy to the entity's 2005 levy or the average of 2005-2008 levies. -Require a two-third majority vote in a November election to pass tax increases above the levy limit or approve bonds. -Limit annual increases in tax value to 2 percent plus a 2003 baseline valuation on new improvements. The initiatives will be available for signing at the following at these times and locations: -Today, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., in the vacant lot at the intersection of 4th Avenue and 15th Street. -Saturday, Noon-2 p.m., at the Foothills Library, 11299 S. Grenwood Ave. -Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., in the northeast corner of the parking lot at the Yuma Civic Center. -April 1-6, during the Yuma County Fair at the county fairgrounds, theater building.
